The purpose of the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is to raise awareness of the possibilities of internet use and other information and communication technologies (ICTs), and of the means leading to bridging the digital divide. May 17 marks the anniversary of the signing of the first international telegraph agreement and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union.
