University graduate "Yusra Al-Derham"... Creativity, innovation, and awards at both the local and international levels.
Graduate Yusra Al-Hassan Abdu Al-Derham, an alumna of King Khalid University's College of Sciences and Arts in Rijal Alma, has become a shining example of success and creativity, with remarkable achievements that have garnered significant recognition in recent times.
Recently, Yusra won the gold medal at the Archimedes International Exhibition in Moscow for her invention of the electronic mask made from nano-fabric. This innovation addresses the challenges posed by COVID-19 and offers a convenient way to manage the pandemic. The mask is distinguished by its automatic temperature detection feature, emitting a specific sound when the temperature exceeds a certain threshold, and it is washable and reusable.
This innovation is just one of Yusra's many accomplishments. It follows her previous inventions, including a machine for classifying Qur'ans and an earlier version of the nano-technology electronic mask, which she presented in the "Creative Solutions for the COVID-19 Crisis" competition at King Khalid University.
For years, Yusra has been dedicated to her work, consistently achieving top positions in various competitions. In 2016, she secured fifth place in the local "My Idea" competition at King Khalid University. She also won two bronze medals, a silver medal, and a gold medal in research and innovation competitions held in Riyadh, Abha, and Muhayil Asir. Additionally, she earned second place in the Productive University competition at Imam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University and first place in Prince Turki bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud’s Award for Science, Excellence, and Innovation across Tihama Asir governorates.
Internationally, Yusra has also made her mark. She won second place in the "Innovation in the Time of Corona" virtual hackathon organized by the Bahraini Researchers and Inventors Society (BRINZ) in 2020. In 2017, she earned the gold medal and the Global Excellence Award at the International Invention, Innovation & Technology Exhibition (ITEX) in Malaysia.
Yusra emphasizes that hard work, research, creativity, and innovation are key values and crucial goals in line with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030. She also commends the support provided by the Kingdom to serve its citizens.
Dr. Siham Al-Haider, Dean of the College of Sciences, Arts, and Community in Rijal Alma, expressed her pride in Yusra, saying, "Yusra is a true source of pride for the region, the nation, and the university. She exemplifies the diligent student who constantly strives for achievement, excellence, and creativity, offering the best of her inventions and innovations to serve her country and community, addressing societal needs through her creations."
She added, "At Rijal Alma College, we are committed to fostering creativity and nurturing talents in our students. We have established the Talent and Creativity Unit, supervised by Ms. Ahoud Al-Qahtani, where various workshops and courses are held to open new horizons for students and help them achieve their goals and ambitions."
