University Rector Inaugurates Drug Awareness Campaign

King Khalid University Rector, His Excellency Prof. Falleh Al-Solamy, inaugurated a new drug prevention program known as 'We are Against It' on Friday evening at the Rashid Mall. The campaign was organized by the medical college student club in collaboration with the Student Guidance Unit of the General Directorate for Drug Control in the Asir region.

After conducting the ribbon cutting ceremony, His Excellency toured the program exhibition with the organizers and participants. There were many exhibits providing useful information on the inherent dangers of drug use and the perils of addiction. There was also information available on drug treatment programs. In addition, the General Directorate for Drug Control had a staff psychiatrist at the event who gave people advice on methods to quit smoking.

His Excellency commended the individuals and entities who made the new program possible. 'All over the world, people suffer from the devastating effects of drug usage. There is so much pain, anguish and wasted human potential due to the abuse of narcotics. Drugs are a problem that affect communities and nations. The solution requires partnerships and collaborative efforts among the various stakeholders in those communities and nations. The university is committed to raising drug awareness and promoting healthy lifestyles in the Kingdom', he stated. The Rector thanked the General Directorate for its patronage and the Rashid Mall for providing the event location.

Dean of the Medical College, Dr. Suleiman bin Mohammed Al-Hamid, thanked Rector Al-Solamy for his generous sponsorship of the program. He also thanked the Medical College student club for all of its hard work in organizing the event. The Dean pointed out that drug abuse awareness and prevention are important elements of the college's community service and outreach efforts.

On another subject, the Rector received a briefing on the Environmental Week activities that coincided with the drug awareness program. The environmental related events were in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, and a number of related government agencies in the region. The Rector noted that the university is conducting its environmental outreach efforts under the slogan 'Your Environment, Your Home'. These efforts are designed to help educate the public on the importance of keeping the environment clean and adopting sustainable resource management practices in the Kingdom.
