Within the framework of the 16th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (COP16), the Director of the Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Center for Environmental Research and Sustainability of Natural Resources at King Khalid University, Dr. Rahma Nasser Al-Qathanin, participated in a panel discussion titled "Mountain Ecosystems in Arid Regions." During the discussion, she presented a scientific paper entitled "Mountain Systems in Saudi Arabia," where she presented important scientific insights into the significance of these systems and their pivotal role in the environment and sustainable development in the Kingdom.

Dr. Al-Qathanin emphasized that the mountain systems in Saudi Arabia are one of the geographical pillars characterized by unique environmental and topographical diversity, making them a significant focus for scientific research and studies. She also highlighted the essential role played by these mountain ranges in achieving the goals of sustainable development and environmental protection. She explained that mountains in Saudi Arabia are not merely natural landmarks but are a vital element in the biodiversity and climate that distinguishes the Kingdom. She mentioned that mountainous regions such as the Sarawat and Tihamah mountains possess unique environments that support numerous rare plant and animal species not found anywhere else in the Kingdom.

Dr. Al-Qathanin touched on the importance of preserving mountain systems as vital environmental resources, emphasizing the need to adopt effective measures to maintain the ecological balance in these areas, especially in light of current challenges such as urban expansion and the impacts of climate change.

In the context of discussing the sustainability of these systems, she called for the promotion of biodiversity projects and sustainable agriculture, while investing in ecotourism as a strategic option that can achieve economic improvements without harming nature.

She also reviewed the national efforts undertaken within the framework of Saudi Vision 2030, which focus on environmental sustainability and the development of mountainous regions while preserving their natural components. She praised the participation of local and international scientists and researchers in these scientific events, emphasizing the importance of raising environmental awareness and exchanging expertise on best practices for preserving natural resources and mountains.

Dr. Al-Qathanin concluded her speech by emphasizing that achieving sustainable development in mountainous regions requires close cooperation between government agencies, research institutions, and local communities, stressing the importance of preserving mountain systems as one of the natural and economic pillars that contribute to the Kingdom's advancement and enhance its position in various fields.
