On the Occasion of Its 50th Anniversary: King Khalid University’s College of Sharia Organizes an International Conference on Sharia Studies and Vision 2030

Today, Tuesday, King Khalid University launched a prominent scientific conference titled "Sharia Studies and the Question of Development in Light of Vision 2030," in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the College of Sharia and Fundamentals of Religion. The conference is being held at the Exhibition and Conference Center at the University City in Al-Fara’a and will continue for two days, with the attendance of a distinguished group of academics and researchers from inside and outside the Kingdom, as well as the deans of Sharia colleges from Saudi universities.

In his opening remarks, the Acting President of the University, Professor Dr. Saad bin Mohammed bin Dajam, began by extending congratulations on the occasion of the 94th National Day to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz. He prayed for continued security, safety, glory, and empowerment for the country under the wise leadership. He also expressed his happiness at the organization of this conference, which reflects King Khalid University's pride in the College of Sharia and Fundamentals of Religion, celebrating fifty years of rigorous academic and scientific work.

Dr. bin Dajam emphasized that the government is making great efforts to develop education and enhance scientific research, pointing out that this conference is one of the fruits of those blessed efforts. He also noted that the conference aligns with Vision 2030 and the King Khalid University 2030 strategy, which itself aligns with the Asir Region Development Strategy. He stressed the role of Sharia studies in promoting development and addressing societal issues.

For his part, the Dean of the College of Sharia and Fundamentals of Religion at King Khalid University, Professor Dr. Muhammad bin Ali Al-Qarni, explained that the conference coincides with the fiftieth anniversary of the college, which was the pioneer of university education in the Asir region. He affirmed that the college continues to strive with determination and ambition towards achieving accomplishments and global reach. He highlighted that these fifty years represent a journey of knowledge building, academic foundation, research participation, and community service.

Dr. Al-Qarni emphasized that the college continues to develop its academic and research programs in line with the university's strategy, noting that the college has completed aligning its programs with this strategy. He also mentioned that the college is working on developing 11 new specialized programs at the diploma and postgraduate levels, and is preparing to launch an international bachelor's program with both in-person and online learning options. He expressed his gratitude to all those who contributed to organizing the conference, pointing out the significance of this scientific event in promoting dialogue between Sharia sciences and sustainable development according to Vision 2030.

This was followed by a speech on behalf of the conference participants delivered by Professor Dr. Maher Jamil, Dean of the College of Law at Kafr El Sheikh University in Egypt. He praised the great efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in supporting education and scientific research, noting that the choice of the conference title, "Sharia Studies and the Question of Development in Light of Vision 2030," reflects a deep awareness of the challenges and opportunities facing Islamic societies in the modern era. Dr. Maher emphasized the importance of this conference in enhancing mutual understanding between Sharia sciences and development issues, pointing out that bringing these two axes together represents a crucial step towards achieving the ambitious goals of Vision 2030.

The opening ceremony also included several segments, with attendees watching a visual presentation showcasing the history of the College of Sharia and Fundamentals of Religion and its most notable achievements over the past fifty years. Additionally, there was a poetry segment presented by Dr. Rashid bin Ali Hallal, a faculty member in the college. At the conclusion of the conference, the Acting President of the University and the Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Scientific Research, and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Professor Dr. Hamid bin Majdoua Al-Qarni, honored the conference's keynote speaker, former Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Dr. Ali bin Ibrahim Al-Namlah, in recognition of his participation. The ceremony also honored session chairs and deans of Sharia colleges from various Saudi universities for their efforts in managing scientific discussions and enriching the conference sessions with their outstanding ideas and perspectives.

It is worth noting that the conference will feature 23 academic papers presented across 6 specialized sessions. The conference aims to highlight the role of Sharia studies in achieving sustainable development according to Vision 2030. It will also focus on establishing fundamental concepts such as development, economy, and nation from a Sharia perspective, and will explore the role of Sharia colleges in supporting Vision 2030 and addressing contemporary social and economic challenges, among other topics.
