King Khalid University launched the “Summer School of Artificial Intelligence”, which kicked off today, Sunday August 11th to August 13th, 2024. It is organized by the University Agency for Graduate Studies and Research, represented by the Artificial Intelligence Center, and will be held over the span of three days. This comes as part of the university’s ongoing efforts to promote innovation and scientific research in the field of advanced technology and artificial intelligence; in the presence of experts, AI enthusiasts, general education students, and faculty members.

First day activities were launched at the workshop hall of the Central Library in Al-Fara’a, where the Director of the AI Center, Dr. Ali bin Mohammad Al-Qahtani, welcomed the attendees, and stressed the importance of this initiative. Al-Qahtani confirmed in his opening speech, that the “Summer School of Artificial Intelligence”, represented an exceptional opportunity to participants to acquire new experiences and interact with the newest advanced technology, priming them for future challenges in the field of technology.

On his end, the Director of the “Summer School of Artificial Intelligence”, Dr. Yahya Al-Qahtani, explained that the school attracted wide participation, as 545 participants applied, with 50 of them being accepted according to precise criteria that ensures the quality of the educational experience. Admission categories included faculty members, university employees, and students with various academic backgrounds, including general education students.

Dr. Al-Qahtani added: “Through this summer school, we seek to provide an integrated educational experience that covers a variety of advanced topics in artificial intelligence. The school will be held over three intensive days that include 9 workshops, at a rate of three workshops per day, which were carefully designed to meet the needs of participants, and enhance their skills in this vital field.”

The first day's program included a number of specialized workshops presented by experts in artificial intelligence. It began with the “Introduction to Python” workshop, which discussed the basics of programming and data structures using Python, and was designed to prepare participants to deal with various artificial intelligence applications. This was followed by the “Training Machine Learning Models Using Python” workshop, which presented practical applications for data analysis and model training.

In addition to the workshops, the first day included various activities to facilitate communication among the participants. Discussions were organized in which a number of experts and academics participated, who provided in-depth insights into the future of artificial intelligence and its applications in various fields.

The Artificial Intelligence Summer School activities will continue tomorrow, Monday, with a diverse program that includes a number of advanced workshops, including the “Using Neural Networks to Learn Arabic Phonetic Rules” workshop, which will focus on how to apply artificial intelligence techniques to improve natural language processing in the Arabic language. The “Diagnosing Early Parkinson’s Symptoms Using Deep Learning” workshop will also be presented, which will review innovative techniques in using artificial intelligence to develop medical diagnostic tools. In addition to interactive sessions among participants, giving them the opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas about the latest innovations and applications in the field of artificial intelligence.
