Activities to Raise Sustainability in Mahayel Asir

In line with the Kingdom's vision 2030, interest in environmental sustainability and raising awareness of the importance of a sustainable environmental preservation systems the Home Economics Department at King Khalid University, in cooperation with Technical Affairs, launched the "Estidama" initiative, which aims to achieve the principle of sustainable development and raise the level of environmental awareness in the field of public hygiene and waste recycling and utilization.

Ghaida Al-Omari, head of the Home Economics Department at the College of Arts and Science in Mahayel Asir, explained that the recent concluded initiative focused on planting seedlings and flowers in the department's yard at the College of Arts and Science, the office corridors, beautifying the department, and removing visual distortion through the use of environmentally friendly materials in three areas: Fashion Design, Nutrition, and Artistic Works.

Al-Omari explained that the fashion design corner presented by the student Bashayer Ibrahim, and supervised by Dr. Amira Abdullah, included a presentation of sustainable fashion, types of environmentally friendly fabrics and yarns, green fashion, and examples of female students ’work in using simple materials and recycling for clothes, employing Asiri art and Islamic art in enhancing identity

While the food corner, which was implemented under the supervision of Dr. Lamia Malasi and Professor Saada Abdel Karim, included the use waste food such as peel in the manufacture of new items and , it also included raising awareness on the harmful effects of using cleaning tools and air fresheners on the environment and human health, in addition to a review of some environmental alternatives for hygiene materials.

As for the artistic corner, the corner displayed a group of art works based on experimental school of thought. The students also presented two workshops in the corner, recycling old paintings and turn them into a new work and training children to automatically practice the art of painting on canvas.

It is worth noting that the event was highly praised and visited by many artists, interested persons and community members.
