Intellectual Security Forum on Digital Citizenship Kicks Off

On January 21 King Khalid University, represented by the Intellectual Awareness Unit, will hold a symposium titled 'Digital Citizenship' at the main campus. The purpose of the event will be to discuss and analyze intellectual security in the Kingdom. The Intellectual Awareness Unit organized and conducted the two-day program. Honored guests will include His Royal Highness Prince Faisal bin Mohammad bin Nasar bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. The symposium will feature a number of digital security experts from around the Kingdom leading a variety of group discussions and presentations on security issues.

University Rector, Prof. Falleh R.M. Al-Solamy, explained that the forum is part of a series of events that illustrate the university's strong interest in national development and intellectual security issues. Rector Al-Solamy stressed that intellectual awareness and balance are two of the most critical factors in a strong intellectual awareness foundation in both the individual and the community. He emphasized that specialists from universities around the Kingdom will deliver presentations over the next two days. Rector Al-Solamy expressed his confidence in the forum achieving its goals and objectives to raise the awareness on the role of 'digital citizenship integrity' in Saudi society. This effort is an integral part in maintaining a cohesive and well-informed populous he related.

Vice Rector of Graduate Studies and Research, Dr. Saad Al-Amry, reiterated that the forum is designed to uphold the university's commitment to intellectual security. He noted that young people, who are heavy users of the internet and social media, are particularly vulnerable to harmful influences in the digital age. Vice Rector Al-Amry stated that forums such as these are one of the best ways of maintaining awareness of this critical social issue. He then thanked the organizing committee of the forum for comprehensively completing all preparations.

General Supervisor of the Intellectual Awareness Unit, Dr. Yahya Al-Bakri, reviewed the topics covered in the forum as follows:

  • The reality of social media in Saudi Arabia;
  • Extremism on social media networks;
  • The role of social media in supporting intellectual security;
  • The role of educational institutions in supporting intellectual security;
  • The threat of inappropriate social media usage and conduct to intellectual awareness;
  • The methods of enhancing national cohesiveness through social media.

Of note, the forum will also host a number of training courses and workshops that are tailored to supervisors and members of student activity clubs. Dr. Al-Bakri added that the forum would also include several special competitions as follows:

  • Best participating paper;
  • Most influential issue awareness YouTube video;
  • Best Snapchat post;
  • Best motion graphic video;
  • Best-written submission.
