A King Khalid University (KKU) Ph.D. Scholar, Majeid Saad Al Faye, who was sent to Britain, has obtained the best scientific poster award during his participation in the Cancer Diagnostics Conference and Expo which took place in Rome, Italy, from 13 to 16 of June 2016.

In this work we identified the differentially expressed FABP9 mRNAs whose levels in all malignant cell lines were higher than that in the normal cells. FABP9 protein was highly expressed in highly malignant cell lines, but its level in the normal cells and other malignant cell lines was not detectable. When analysed in an archival set of prostate tissues, FABP9 staining intensity was significantly higher in carcinomas than in normal cases and the increased FABP9 was significantly correlated with the reduced patient survival time. Moreover, increased level of FABP9 was significantly associated with the increased joint Gleason scores and androgen index level.

Suppression of FABP9 expression inhibited their invasiveness. The real benefit of the widespread use of screening for PSA level predict prostate cancer incidence is still a matter of debate.

FABP9 is a more reliable prognostic marker than PSA to predict the outcome of prostate cancer patients and it may play an important role in the invasion of prostate cancer cells.
