King Khalid University - Media Center

King Khalid University Gastroenterology, Endoscopy and Gastrointestinal Disease Assistant Professor Dr. Mohammad Attia Al-Zahrani presented a lecture on Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). His lecture was part of the 7th annual Health Awareness and Education program in Bariq, and was sponsored by the Deanship of Community Service and Continuing Education. His lecture included information about the causes, symptoms and treatment of IBS. The target audience was nurses and other healthcare professionals.

In his lecture, Dr. Al-Zahrani stated that IBS is the most common gastrointestinal disease. Interestingly, he noted that psychological stress is the most common cause of the physical manifestation of IBS. He added that chronic anxiety, clinical depression and mental illness are other underlying causes of IBS. Common symptoms include: Chronic abdominal pain, bloating, gas accumulation, constipation, chronic diarrhea. The number and scope of symptoms vary among individuals.

Treatment of IBS usually starts with a healthy lifestyle, he noted. Proper diet, exercise and stress relief are all significant aspects of preventing or mitigating the effects of IBS. In severe to extreme cases, medication may be necessary. Tranquilizers (ie. mebeverine and melanin), anti-depressants and over the counter medicaments for stomach discomfort are frequently utilized over the course of treatment. Doctors try to minimize the use of medications over time, as this is best for patient wellness in the long-term.
