A scientific research at King Khalid University has shown the optimal timing for hip replacement in patients with sickle cell anemia, and this was determined by the time of mismatch of joint surface rotation.

The research presented by the associate professor at the College of Medicine at King Khalid University and the consultant of prosthetic surgery, Dr. Muhammad bin Lafi Al-Otaibi, was recently published in the international journals (ISI).

Al-Otaibi explained that the research was the result of an observation that lasted for years, pointing that the research idea had been previously discussed in two international conferences in Canada in 2018 and in 2019 in Amman, which centered around the complete replacement of the hip joint in sickle cell patients suffering from vascular necrosis of the head of the femur to establish a clinical phenomenon related to the optimal timing of sickle hip replacement procedure, stating that avascular necrosis of the femoral head leads to osteoporosis and stiffness of the hip joint, and affects the function of the joint in patients.
