King Khalid University faculty member Professor Mohammed Al-Baqir, digestive system and internal medicine consultant, explained that fasting is very beneficial to the human body, but in some situations, patients with certain diseases are required to deal with their conditions during the holy month to avoid complications. Professor Al-Baqir explained that a stomach germ causes most of the infections and ulcers of the stomach -- or the use of arthritis drugs. He asserted that patients in cases like these must follow doctor instructions in order to fully recover and be able to fast, noting that fasting helps patients with acid reflux in the esophagus, and those who suffer from this disease should not over-eat or sleep immediately after breakfast.

Professor Al-Baqir also advised those with liver failure, and high blood pressure in the arteries --which leads to varicose veins -- should consult their physicians and follow scientific recommendations.

He added that fasting is useful for patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome because it helps improve their digestive system. Patients with irritable bowel syndrome should maintain a good balance – a diet rich in complex carbohydrates, proteins, and fibers while limiting fatty foods at breakfast and suhur. Additionally, Patients with ulcerative colitis, and Crohns disease which are considered immune diseases that may lead to deterioration of patient health as a result of food loss which causes inflammation affects in intestines, are advised to see a specialist, who can classify the degree of inflammation, and decide whether or not a patient can fast. He finally concluded that fasting is useful for patients who suffer from overeating and stomach relaxants as long as they are stable and do not suffer from severe ulcers, both in the stomach or duodenum.
